How Do You Scare Someone?

In writing a suspense novel, you need to know how many ways you can threaten someone by scaring the daylights out of them. Through the day, I take notes in my ever popular notebook. Usually, it can be found on the coffee table in the family room where it is handy when I am resting.

Last week, I had a new sitter for my mother. There on the coffee table was my notebook, that I thought nothing about, with the heading, "How To Scare Someone." The sitter never said anything, but I do suspect she read it. She does not know me that well, but I hope she knows me better than to think I am going to do some of these things to her.

Were do I get ideas? Usually by daily life. There are things each day in our life that can scare us. We hear of someone escaped from jail, and can imagine all sorts of things. My mind is pretty vivid, so I don't have to think too hard. I watch several shows on television that help me with my research. Then there is always the internet and the newspapers.

How would you scare someone?

My daughter has a very real-looking rubber snake she insisted we buy her when she was two or three. It always gives me a few seconds' pause when I see it. I've thought of hiding it somewhere that no one's expecting to see it, just to share that little fillip of fright!
