The Pawn

Last week I read The Pawn by Steven James. I had heard Steven speak at the Blue Ridge Mountain Christian Writers Conference and was very impressed by his humor and his knack of storytelling. When I found his book in a little bookstore, I had to buy it.

Several people at the conference had alluded to his suspenseful writing. I was a little scared to open the book. In fact I kept it for a couple of weeks before I had the courage to open it. Was I surprised?

Yes, it was full of suspense, but also it carried you along with the story in such a way that you did not want to put it down. (I didn't sleep good while I was reading it either.) I couldn't put it down. I would rush through whatever I was doing to get to that book. Books like that are a love/hate thing for me.

At the end, there is a feel good feeling and also still a mystery. Did the Illusionist die or will he show up in the next book? I'm anxious to read the next one, The Rook.

Steven is a true storyteller. There is not a dull moment in the book. The story moves swiftly and interestingly. If you can stand the description of the crimes, you will love this book.
